PARTNER
The Emmaus Community of Palermo is part of the global Emmaus movement, which aims to combat poverty and social exclusion through the principles of work, sharing and mutual aid. The Emmaus Community of Palermo was founded in October 2015, following an international volunteer camp that allowed the opening of the solidarity market in the city. Since its foundation, Emmaus Palermo has gathered many volunteers who support the typical work of collecting and reselling used goods, carry out testimonies and educational activities in schools to raise awareness and participation in the fight against poverty and injustice, and promote the culture of volunteerism. Every summer, Emmaus Italy and Emmaus Palermo organise international volunteer summer camps, in collaboration with local associations and young people from all over the world. Emmaus runs the community in a self-managed and self-financing way, through the sale of second-hand goods and the Solidarity Flea Market, and with the help of local volunteers.
WORK
The volunteers will take part in the classic activities of collecting, sorting, selling, recycling and repairing materials that have always characterised the Emmaus communities. They will share the days with the local volunteers and the people welcomed in the Emmaus community, both in activities and in moments of leisure. Volunteers will take an active part in the organisation of the solidarity flea market, in the selection of materials and their placement at the market. Volunteers will support leisure activities in other youth centers in the city. Expected week could be: Sunday arrival and accommodation; Monday orienteering/training and free time; Tuesday work; Wednesday activities with minors; Thursday work; Friday training and free time; Saturday work; Sunday departure. The work location is 3.4 km from the host site and can be reached by Emmaus’ vehicles.
ACCOMODATION AND FOOD
Volunteers will stay at the Volpe Astuta scout site, a property confiscated from the mafia and used for scouting activities. Volunteers will sleep in tents with air mattresses provided at the campsite. Volunteers will need to bring their own sleeping bag. The kitchen will be run by a local person, but volunteers will take turns to help. There is no Wi-Fi at the campsite. Internet is only available at the volunteer’s place of work. Camping showers will be installed outside without hot water, solar shower bags can be provided if needed.
LOCATION & LEISURE ACTIVITY
In their free time, volunteers can visit the city and its monuments, as well as enjoying time at the seaside.
REQUIREMENTS
Volunteers should have an interest in charity work and previous volunteering experience is very welcome.
