PARTNER

Environmental protection is a pressing global priority, particularly in Nepal, where solid waste management poses significant environmental and health challenges. Rapid urbanization and changing consumption patterns increase waste, which, if poorly managed, causes environmental harm and health risks. In VIN’s communities, improper waste disposal in schools and public areas contributes to littering and health issues like respiratory problems, diarrhea, and skin diseases. Non-biodegradable waste (NBW), especially in areas like Jitpurphedi and Kavresthali, further damages the environment and agriculture. This project, “Environmental Stewards: Preserving Our Common Home,” aims to promote sustainable waste management practices such as segregation, recycling, and composting, empowering communities for a cleaner, healthier Nepal.

WORK

•Organize the waste management /Community clean-up campaign involving community people. •Train local people on garbage management using the 3R principles: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (segregation, disposal, domestic methodology for making compost fertilizer, etc.) •Develop a kitchen garden concept and train the households to implement it.

Host organization

Volunteers Initiative Nepal

VIN is a non-governmental, non-political, non-religious, not-for-profit organization which was founded in 2005 by a diverse group drawn from development workers, educationalists, social activists and other professionals. VIN’s mission is to empower marginalised communities, with a focus on women and children, through enhanced educational programs and community training to promote equality, economic well-being and basic human rights. Community Focused Programmes VIN has a main community based pilot project in Jitpur, a rural community 11km from Kathmandu city. The area was chosen because of its geographical location, lack of development agencies, people interest, and its development needs. VIN has established 4 key programmes in Jitpur:  Women’s Empowerment  Children’s Development  Youth Development  Community Health The organization’s objective is for these programmes to be run by the Jitpur community (independently of VIN) by 2012. Our community volunteering projects are based on around above 4 major programmes. Out of Community Support Programmes VIN runs a number of other volunteer placement programmes not directly related to the Jitpur community but indirectly these programmes still contribute to our main programs. The programmes include:  Teaching English at Buddhist monasteries / nunneries  International journalism  Environment, conservation and agro forestry  Orphanage support  Working with disable people (e.g., deaf, elderly) http://www.volunteeringnepal.org
